Dear friends in Jesus Christ, in today’s first reading we read of God’s promise to His people: He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry, when he hears it; he will answer (Isaiah 30:19). God is our Shepherd, guiding and caring for us. In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends out His disciples to spread the Good News, instructing them to proclaim the kingdom of heaven and to heal every disease and sickness (Matthew 9:35, 10:1).
Jesus is our Shepherd, sending His disciples to care for His flock. We can understand this great truth throughout the Bible where God’s shepherding care is witnessed. David, the young shepherd boy, becomes King of Israel (1 Samuel 16:1-13). The Good Shepherd leaves the ninety nine to find the lost sheep (Luke 15:4-7). Jesus, the Great Shepherd, lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11).
My dear friends these incidents remind us that God is our Shepherd, guiding, caring, and seeking us out. As Isaiah writes in 30:21, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it.” Come, my dear friends let us listen to the Shepherd’s voice and follow His guidance so that we may be able experience His care in our lives.
